Google Desktop Search
Author: Tala
I am such a Google whore that the moment I saw the GDS article on Slashdot, I downloaded the app. Installation gave me this error. So I did what I should’ve done in the first place and went to the GDS Support Page. I looked around Scripting News for reviews from people who’ve used it as well. Dave Sullivan’s article says that GDS only currently indexes the primary drive. My laptop hard drive is partitioned, and all my data goes to drive D:.
GeekFun outlines some of the points why I uninstalled GDS. I use Firefox, and do not use Outlook/Outlook Express. It’s such a surprise and, well, disappointment that Google launched the GDS without support for Firefox. Kottke.org is concerned about privacy issues. Will stuff from my desktop suddenly appear on Google searches?
Anyway, right after I uninstalled the app I was redirected to their Support/Help page. They had this 1-question feedback form on why I uninstalled GDS. I cited the above reasons, suggested that integration with the Deskbar would be nifty, clicked ‘Submit’, and was told that they’re working on incorporating users’ suggestions. Do it as soon as you can! I want my GDS! :teehee:
Oh if you want to give it a roll, O’Reilly has good how-to.
